Car Drives On Top of Other Car in Albemarle Crash, Police Make Arrest
A crazy four car crash landed one car on top of another at a busy Route 29 intersection Saturday night.
Albemarle County Police arrested the driver of the white sedan, which came to rest on top of another vehicle. The driver, 51-year-old Donald Straus is charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Police say his blood alcohol content was nearly twice the legal limit at .15.
Witnesses say Straus was making a fast right hand turn onto Hydraulic Road from Route 29 just before 7:30, when he swerved to avoid another car, and instead, drove up on top of a black convertible, that he struck head on.
Jamie Page, the passenger in that convertible says the entire situation was pretty scary. "He tried to drive over top the car like the car was the road to him, and he just kept going. And the tire was in the windshield - the windshield was caving in and he was just trying to get away," she said.
Page says the driver she was with, a 17-year-old boy, shielded her when the other car broke through the windshield. He may be her hero, or at the very least, he made quite an impression. The two were on their first date.
One person was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with non life threatening injuries.
