Free Tax Help in Charlottesville

Posted: Updated:

The time is now for low-income families to receive free help filing their taxes.

The Monticello Area Community Action Agency (MACAA) said it's important to schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Lindell Chavis is a case manager for the Family Self Sufficiency Project at MACAA and said this year, families that make as much as $50,000 can qualify for the free assistance.

The non-profit says based on the number of tax credits for which a person is eligible, they could see a big return - in some cases, thousands of dollars.

"We are filing electronically this year so they can have their money within seven days," Chavis said.

MACAA is part of the Thomas Jefferson Area Earned Income Tax Credit Coalition. The coalition helps low-income working families in the Charlottesville area with their taxes.

The free tax preparation is available at MACAA and several other locations including the University of Virginia Credit Union, the Thomas Jefferson Area United Way and the Senior Center in Charlottesville. Some require appointments and some accept walk-ins.

Free tax preparation by IRS certified volunteers is available at these locations: http://www.unitedwaytja.org/Downloads/EITC/EITC_TaxSite_Flyer_2012.pdf
