Equipment Overturned at Construction Accident in Albemarle

Posted: Updated:

A big piece of construction equipment overturned at a job site along Route 29 North in Albemarle County Thursday.  It's made for quite a sight - for drivers - and what must have been quite a scare for the man operating the excavator.

It's not something you see every day along busy Route 29 - a large excavator overturned on its side.

Chief Dan Eggleston with Albemarle County Fire & Rescue said, "It looked like it was on unstable foundation there that the operator was operating in and just caused it to tip over."

Just before 9:30 Thursday morning, emergency crews were called to the 400 block of Westfield Road off Route 29.  D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company out of Richmond was out there demolishing the old Asian Buffet restaurant.  The excavator came crashing to the ground with enough force that the bucket was buried under the asphalt parking lot.

"The bucket and the boom absorbed most of the blow which kept the cab from driving into the ground which led to an uninjured person," said Eggleston.

No one was injured in the accident.  Eggleston says his investigator will forward any findings to state construction site regulators.

Eggleston said, "This is one of those kind of calls we don't get very often but is very concerning because of the size and the complexity of the piece of machinery like this."

Folks at the site Thursday didn't want to comment, and calls and emails to those at the office in Richmond have not been returned.

The NBC29 newsroom received the following press release from Albemarle County Fire Rescue:
