Books Below the Equator Raises Global Awareness in Greene County
A group of Greene County middle school students is raising money to promote literacy around the globe. Students from William Monroe Middle School spent the morning selling crafts, cards, and baked goods at the Holiday City Market in Charlottesville.
Books Below the Equator is raising money to take books to students in Ecuador next summer. However, the project's focus is much more than just words on a page.
William Monroe middle school teacher Erin James said, "Part of the project is global awareness and raising environmental awareness not only in our own community, but also helping the students on the Galapagos Islands."
This is the school's first international project, and will be the first time many students have traveled outside the united states.
