UVA Hoops Winning With Defense

Posted: Updated:

The UVA men's basketball team has not allowed an opponent to score 60 points this season.

That's one of the main reasons the Cavaliers are off to their best start since 2004.

The 8-1 'Hoos have won six games in a row.

Virginia leads the ACC in scoring defense, giving up less than 48 points a game.

Five of UVA's nine opponents this season haven't reached 50 points.

Guards Sammy Zeglinksi and Jontel Evans rank in the top ten in the ACC in steals per game, as the team ranks second in the league in steals per contest.

Senior center Assane Sene is in the top ten in the conference in blocks per game as well.

UVA sophomore Joe Harris says, "Defense is Virginia basketball, especially with Coach Bennett at the helm. That's what he focuses on primarily, and that's what we take a lot of pride in is stopping teams. We feel like that gives us the best chance of winning ball games."

UVA junior point guard Jontel Evans adds, "That's our main focus. That's our bread and butter, and that's our only chance that we have to win big games. We've proved that our defense can keep us in games. When we play like that, and our defense is clicking, we're a tough team to beat."
