Bone Density Scans Under-Used Among Men

Posted: Updated:

Do you know how strong your bones are?

Some health care providers say bone density scans are under-used, primarily among men.

A bone density scan can determine if you have osteoporosis. It is recommended post menopausal women be checked and anyone with a family history or certain thyroid diseases be screened.

Melinda Kegley is a bone density technician at Martha Jefferson Hospital. "The good news about knowing of course then we can help by putting you on medication or making sure your calcium and vitamin D levels are appropriate," she said.

Health care providers say it's helpful to get screened, so you can reduce your risk of spine and hip fractures.

Treatment for osteoporosis can include taking a vitamin supplement or medications.

The scan only takes about 15 minutes and is normally covered by insurance.
