The Wilson Memorial football team will play in the state semifinals for the first time in school history Saturday, as the Green Hornets play at undefeated Goochland.
Wilson had never advanced past the first round of the playoffs before this year, but now find themselves one game away from playing for a state title.
Senior center Wes Curtis says, "At first it was kind of disbelief, that we've been winning this far, but now it's kind of like, 'We can do this. We can move on and win.' It's been amazing."
Jeremiah Major is in his first season as the Hornets head coach, and is also a Wilson Memorial alumnus.
"We haven't played this well for a long time," says Major. "The kids are playing great together. We just have to do it again this week, if we want to continue on."
The Hornets offense has averaged 51 points per game in their three playoff wins this year.
"They play well together," says Major. "We put in a new offense this year, and the guys have bought into it. They're starting to jell, and play good football at the proper time.
Senior quarterback Grant Sauer says, "We really like this new offense. The blocking schemes, we like everything about it. We have Connery Swift and Malik Rucks back there. All I have to do is hand them the ball, and they take it as far as they want. I feel really confident about our offense, and we're going to keep putting up points."
Wilson Memorial will play at Goochland Saturday at 2pm.
