Hundreds of low income families in Nelson County can rest assured they will have a turkey on the dinner table this Thanksgiving. In less than 24 hours, the Nelson County Food Pantry replaced 300 birds that spoiled when a freezer broke Friday.
The pantry spent nearly $4,000 budgeted for Christmas turkeys to replace the ones that were thrown away.
Herb Thomas, a Nelson County Food Pantry volunteer said, "There's many poor, disadvantaged people, a lot of elderly come to us for support. We wanted to make sure this Thanksgiving was as special as every other Thanksgiving for them."
Now the pantry's fundraising efforts are shifting into overdrive to help pay for Christmas turkeys. Volunteers say any donations are appreciated, but money does the most good because they can purchase food at low wholesale prices.
