Nelson County's food pantry needs your help to recover after a freezer failure ruined a slew of Thanksgiving turkeys. The pantry lost more than 300 holiday birds Friday when the freezer shut down unexpectedly.
Volunteers spent all day cleaning up and had to drive in a back-up shipment of turkeys to hand out to families Saturday. Now the pantry is out more than $3,600, but leaders are still thankful for their dedicated team of helping hands.
Nelson County Pantry Vice President Marian Dixon said, "God love our volunteers…How we would ever get by without them, I will never know."
The pantry now has no turkeys to serve up at Christmas and relies completely on private donations to keep up with the demand.
