Virginia state police are investigating a fatal crash on Interstate 64. The accident happened late Friday morning on I-64 eastbound, near the Fifth Street exit.
A Honda Civic and Ford truck collided in the far left lane. The truck flipped at least three times, the driver was partially ejected and died at the scene.
His passenger was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center with serious injuries.
The Honda's driver was not injured in the crash.
State police say charges are pending and the investigation is ongoing.
Virginia State Police Statement:
At 10:25 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper J.C. Crabtree was called to the scene of a two-vehicle crash in the eastbound lanes of I-64 at the 121 mile marker in Albemarle County. A 1997 Honda Civic and 1985 Ford Ranger pickup truck collided in the far left lane. The impact of the crash caused the pickup truck to overturn at least three times.
The male driver of the pickup truck was partially ejected and died at the scene. The male passenger was completed ejected from the pickup truck. The passenger was transported to UVA Hospital for treatment of serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Neither the driver nor passenger was wearing a seat belt.
The male driver of the Honda Civic, a 25-year-old Charlottesville resident, was not injured in the crash.
The Virginia State Police Accident Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. At this time, charges are pending as the investigation remains ongoing.
