Abshire Murder Trial Underway in Orange County

Posted: Updated:

The murder trial for Eric Abshire started Thursday in Orange County Circuit Court. Abshire's accused of killing his wife, Justine, in 2006.

On Thursday, the court heard testimony from witnesses for the commonwealth and as of 6:00 Thursday night, they had called a dozen witnesses. Justine Abshire's body was found along Taylorsville Road in Orange County in the early hours of the morning on November 3 2006.

Justine Abshire's mother took the stand, along with first responders, people who lived on the road and law enforcement officers who were called to the scene. Several people testified they saw Justine's car parked along Taylorsville Road on the way to the scene.

It was found unlocked with the keys in the ignition. Justine's body was found some 600 feet away. Witnesses say Eric Abshire was kneeling beside her and cradling her.

A Virginia State Trooper and special agent for state police testified Justine's body had multiple lacerations and abrasions, as well as gashes on her head. There was no debris found from the alleged hit and run. There were no skid or brake marks at the scene, but there were drag marks consistent with the fabric of the pants Justine was wearing.

Eric Abshire claims his wife was having car trouble, but Virginia State Police had no trouble starting her car or putting it into gear. Troopers also found Justine's pocketbook and winter coat in the car.

The commonwealth continued to call witnesses past 6:00. The trial is expected to last two weeks.
