Culpeper Emergency Operations Center
Press Release

As of this evening building officials in Culpeper County have cleared most downtown buildings for re-entry. Many downtown businesses opened for business around noon.

Nine structures in the Town of Culpeper have been condemned. (One of the structures on South East Street has four addresses.)

One building, 118 North Main Street, has been condemned and will be demolished. The section of Main Street around this building will remain closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic until this issue is resolved. As a result of the condemnation, sixteen adults and one infant have been displaced from a residential apartment complex located at the rear entrance of that address.

Red Cross officials are working to provide services to those families.

The Culpeper Town Police Department will work with anyone who needs access to vehicles or condemned buildings.

The following streets are still closed in the Town of Culpeper for vehicular and pedestrian traffic:
1) North Main Street from Davis Street to Cameron Street
2) East Street from East Culpeper Street to East Spencer Street
3) 100 block of West Cameron Street

Five buildings are still without power in the Town of Culpeper; power was cut to these structures as a precautionary measure.

Culpeper schools will be in session on Thursday, Aug. 25. Town offices, county offices and the Culpeper Court building will be open tomorrow. The town tourism office and the Depot will also be open.

Inmates from the Culpeper County Adult Detention Center (county jail) are still housed at regional facilities pending further notice. Damages to the building are being evaluated and relocation back to the CDC will depend on the level of repair needed.

Culpeper Social Services is establishing an overnight shelter and will be operating tonight for those displaced today due to damages to homes and apartments.

The shelter will be located at Reformation Lutheran Church on North Main Street beginning at 6 p.m. and ending at 7 a.m. tomorrow morning. Meals will be provided tonight and tomorrow morning. Storage lockers may be provided for individuals needing to store personal items for up to 30 days; this will be determined on an individual basis.

Emergency food services will be available tomorrow morning at Culpeper Human Services at 219 East Davis Street starting at 8:30 a.m.

The joint Emergency Operations Center for the town and county, established for yesterday's earthquake, has been disbanded and emergency services and public information will return to regular operations.
