Louisa County Schools took a major hit from Tuesday's earthquake. Three schools near the epicenter are badly damaged, including Thomas Jefferson Elementary, the middle school and the high school.

Structural engineers were at the schools Wednesday assessing the damage. Superintendent Deborah Pettit says they hope to have some preliminary information by Friday.

Inside Louisa County High School, walls have buckled and in some places have separated from each other and the ceiling. Tiles have fallen along with a number of other items. The damage is extensive.

School leaders are working on contingency plans in case the buildings cannot be used.

"We're confident we're going to get kids in school. Where they're going to be going to schools is the big question," said Greg Strickland with the Louisa County School Board.

Willie Gentry, the chairman of the Louisa County Board of Supervisors said Tuesday that they don't have the money to fix the damage. They will need state and federal assistance.

Administrators are working on a game plan to get students back to class as quickly as possible. As it stands right now, classes won't start again until September 6.
