Lacrosse has been added to the list of sports at Fluvanna County High School. The first season begins February, but getting to this point has taken some time.
Right now, Fluvanna County High School does not have varsity lacrosse teams, only club teams.
The interest to have it as an official high school sport has always been there, but the money was not there. Now, that has changed. Fluvanna County High School Athletic Director Scott Morris says the start-up money was made possible through private funds, fundraisers, and grants from US Lacrosse.
That money adds up to more than $10,000, and Morris says they're applying for more grant money too. They have enough money now to buy uniforms and equipment, but they still need to raise a total of $20,000.
Morris said, "The school board has already approved for us coaching stipends, so we've already got that in place, so we're just doing our interviewing and taking applications right now to get the process started."
Right now, the plan is to have boys and girls varsity lacrosse and possibly JV teams.
Lacrosse season starts in February.
As for facilities, Morris says they're going to have to make do this season. When the new high school opens, the teams will have a brand new field to play on.
