Some stores are already stocking shelves with school supplies, but the upcoming school year has been on one Charlottesville girl's mind all summer. Lucia Hoerr, 11, started a school supply drive called Backpack Buddies last year and is asking the community to help out again.
"We have crayons, scissors glue sticks, erasers, rulers, pencil pouches and pencil boxes and pens," Lucia said. It's just some of the essential school supplies students need to start the school year off right but they can come at a hefty price tag. Lucia kicked off her campaign this year at school with a supply drive and asked fellow classmates to donate.
"Then some of it came from the most earlier donors because we got out the flyers and people donated like the next day," Lucia said.
Last year she filled 61 backpacks that benefited the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Virginia.
"I felt really good and when we handed out the backpacks I knew the feeling I got. I just couldn't stop there so I knew I wanted to do Backpack Buddies and make it an annual thing," Lucia said.
This year she needs more book bags and supplies. She's hoping to fill 65 backpacks. Lucia is busy sending out flyers and asking friends and family to support her cause including her big sister, Berkeley Hoerr.
"She's really determined. If she gets a goal then she wants to go above and beyond that," Berkeley said.
Some of Lucia neighbors are also chipping in including Kathy Walmsley.
"I think she's done such a great job and we always want to support the local kids really try to make a difference with other kids," Walmsley said.
The backpacks will once again go to Boys and Girls Club members.
