What's in Sludge Seeping into Area Streams and Rivers?

Posted: Updated:

On Thursday, Community Activist and Charlottesville City Council Candidate Bob Fenwick held a news conference to detail exactly what's in sludge seeping into area streams and rivers.

Some Albemarle County farm owners are using the material to fertilize their land. Sludge is human waste from sewage plants but Fenwick says it also contains other chemicals that people are pouring down the drain.

"They even say it's a recycled product. This is not recycling that's going on. This is dumping. Human waste from the Washington D.C. metro area is coming into Albemarle County," said Fenwick.

He is calling for a moratorium on the use of sludge until more studies are done on it. Fenwick is running for Charlottesville City Council but says Thursday's event is not related to that run.
