Teen Dies in Nelson County Car Accident

UPDATE:  A young girl has died after a single car crash in Nelson County.

The accident happened Tuesday on Route 6 West, or River Road, near Duncan Hollow at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon when a car driven by a 16-year-old boy rolled over.

The driver was not seriously hurt but his passenger, 14-year-old Kirsten D. Ellis of Nellysford, was partially ejected from the car and suffered fatal injuries.

There's no word yet on what caused the crash. Police say speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash.  Both teens were wearing their seatbelts.

NELSON CO. – A single crash claimed the life of a 14-year-old in Nelson County Tuesday, June 7, 2011. Trooper A.T. Covey was called to the scene at 3:51 p.m. on Route 6 (River Road) about 1.5 miles west of Route 634 (Adial Road).

A 1992 Toyota Camry was traveling west on Route 6. The vehicle ran off the right side of the road, struck a sign then a tree – before overturning and landing in an embankment. The 14-year-old female passenger was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene. The 16-year-old driver suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.

A preliminary investigation indicates speed and alcohol were not factors in the crash. Both individuals were wearing their seatbelts.

The 16-year-old driver has not been charged at this time and the crash remains under investigation.
