Amazing Trees Showcases Massive Oak

Posted: Updated:

A third grade class at Johnson Elementary took time out to check out nature at its finest today.

The kids measured the big oak in the school yard and checked out its leaves. This was all a part of the new Amazing Trees of Charlottesville project, a program aimed at teaching young people in the city about the plants and how important they are to the environment.

Dede Smith, of Amazing Trees of Charlottesville explained, "This is really about community. Our trees are part of our community. Our children are part of our community and it is really about appreciating everybody and everything that is here in our city of Charlottesville."

The Blue Ridge Discovery Center heads the Amazing Trees project. The oak tree ended up being 12 feet around and 77 feet tall.
