Park Street was closed in Charlottesville Thursday morning for about two hours on the 800 block near the 250 bypass, after a single car ran over the sidewalk and hit a power wire guide line.
Lt. Ronnie Roberts, of the Charlottesville Police Department says the car was making a right turn to travel north toward the Fashion Mall area on Rio Road. The driver accelerated the vehicle across the sidewalk, which was elevated on a rock wall, then struck a guide wire. By striking the guide wire, power was then shut down along the southern corridor of Park Street - affecting power in that area down to the police department. According to Dominion's website, by noon Thursday power had been restored.
"He just turned and gave it the accelerator and of course, not bringing the wheel back, it's just like if you don't turn this wheel back and continue in that circle, and as it did here, you cross over the sidewalk and across the wall," said Roberts.
No one has been hurt from the accident and there was a single person in the vehicle at the time of the accident. The road has been cleared, but the top of the pole is bent and crews are trying to prevent that from snapping.
Crews were wary about the position of the car - the gas tank was on the curb line, so crews were trying not to let it leak.
