High School State Championship Saturday

The Saint Anne's-Belfield girls lacrosse team beat Cape Henry Collegiate 19-6 in the VISAA Division II state championship game Saturday to claim its third straight state title Saturday at Old Dominion University in Norfolk.

STAB led 8-5 at half and outscored Cape Henry 11-1 in the second half in the victory.

Senior Addi Bolin led the way with nine goals and four assists for the Saints. Midfielder Lila Satterfield scored four goals in the win. STAB attack Trent Holden had a hat trick and an assist. Midfielder Kate McCollough added two goals and four assists for the Saints. Midfielder Corinna Coffin scored the other STAB goal.

The Saint Anne's-Belfield baseball team beat Paul the VI 3-2 in eight innings in the VISAA Division I state baseball championship game in Colonial Heights Saturday.

It's STAB's fifth state title under head coach Alan Swanson and first since 2006, which makes it the first for the eight Saint seniors.

Senior Brian Yeagle hit a walk-off, bloop single in the bottom of the eighth, scoring Michigan-bound senior Kevin White. Yeagle had two hits in the game, and White scored twice to go along with two stolen bases and three walks. VMI-bound senior Sheldon Shifflett went one for three with a run.

Columbia-bound senior David Spinosa pitched a complete game, allowing just three singles and one hit after the second inning. He allowed no earned runs and struck out seven to improve to 10-0 on the season. Spinosa also had an RBI at the plate.

Yeagle said, "It's awesome. It's the ultimate reward. We worked four years real hard for all of this, and it came true. We got the ultimate prize. It's awesome."

White said, "We were meant to be here. I believe in purpose, and it's emotional, but I'm just thankful we came out on top this time."

Spinosa said, "I know we've been saying we just want to have fun, and you obviously have fun when you win a state championship. Ultimately, that was the goal this year. All the seniors and everyone wanted it, and we got it done, so it's pretty cool."

In the VISAA Division II state baseball championship game in Colonial Heights Saturday, Covenant shutout Christchurch 3-0 to claim the state title.

Sean Rutherford, one of eight Covenant seniors, pitched a complete game, two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and had an RBI double for the Eagles.

Junior Sam Patterson hit a two-run home run in the win.

Covenant finishes the season 23-5, claiming the school's second state title and first since 2000.

In the Jefferson District high school baseball tournament Saturday, #5 seed Western Albemarle won at #4 seed Louisa County 2-0.

The Warriors advance to face #1 seed William Monroe in the JD semifinals Tuesday night at 5:00 in Orange.

In the Shenandoah District Tournament quarterfinals Saturday, the #2 seed Riverheads High School baseball team beat #7 seed Stonewall Jackson 10-6 at RHS.

The Gladiators will play #3 seed Buffalo Gap (which beat #6 seed Central 10-8 Friday night) in the tournament semifinals Tuesday night at 7:30 inside Veterans Memorial Park at JMU.

In the VISAA Division II girls soccer state championship game, Tandem Friends beat Trinity-Meadow View 3-1 to claim the state title.

Tandem Friends led 3-0 at half.
