One year after a Staunton middle-school student died from an overdose of a prescription painkiller, police are investigating possible drug deals at the school.
Investigators served a search warrant this week at the home of a 15-year-old student from Shelburne Middle School. Court records say he sold valium and hydrocodone to a fellow student while at the school. The prescription drugs reportedly came from the boy's home and police say that's all too common.
Staunton Police Officer Lisa Klein said, "How many people have bottles of prescription medications in their medicine cabinets that they're not even thinking about at home? Maybe you had an injury, you have a bottle of vicodin. You only took several of them and you have that bottle sitting in your medicine cabinet - that's what the kids are accessing."
There have been no charges filed yet in this case.
Just over a year ago, Shelburne student Jason Panzino died after taking methadone pills during a camping trip.
