The Piedmont Family YMCA is prepared to build, even though it still faces a lawsuit from its competitors.
Plans are finalized on the $15 million facility and the "Y" is ready to receive bids from contractors in the next few weeks. That 77,000 square foot gym would be built in McIntire Park.
Three commercial fitness centers have sued the city and Albemarle County for giving permission and money for the project, but YMCA supporters want to be ready to start building.
YMCA Chairman Kurt Krueger explained, "Banks may hesitate in light of appeals but at that point, there's nothing court wise that would stop us from moving forward so we want to have all of our ducks lined up in a row so that we in fact can start at the beginning of the summer."
A Charlottesville judge dismissed the case against the county.
The for-profit gyms are scheduled to take the city of Charlottesville to court in April.
