"Buddha Is Not Smiling" was burned today at a mass protest in northern India.
A Book written by a Staunton man is causing controversy half a world away. Erik Curren's book, "Buddha Is Not Smiling" was burned today at a mass protest in northern India near the border with China.
The book investigates allegations of under the table financial deals between a powerful Indian religious leader and China. Both nations have nuclear arms, and the Indian government is concerned the Lama in question is working too closely with the Chinese.
Curren, who is also a practicing Buddhist explained, "On the one hand I'm glad that people are taking my book seriously. On the other hand I'm appalled that in today's day and age, something like a book burning is considered to be a valid form of communication about a controversial issue."
Protestors also waived Buddhist religious flags to show their solidarity.
