Kodi Ravichandran and his team in UVA's Microbiology Department were honored for their work studying cell clearance. That's where cells in the body naturally replace damaged cells that can lead to disease.

"Our goal over the last ten years and specifically in the last couple of years has been to define the various steps by which our body recognizes and removes the dead cells, and replaces them with living ones," said Ravichandran.

He is hopeful the research can lead them to finding the cause of diseases like multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's and then hopefully a cure.
