A non-profit group in Charlottesville is working to give kids a brighter future, but it takes hundreds of volunteers to keep the program running.

For close to ten years, Computers4Kids has been working to help low-income middle and high school students get hands-on training in technology.

Cheryl Ellison, Computers4Kids administrative assistant explained, "This prepares them for their future, a future that they might not have had had they not come here."

Just last month, the non-profit received grants from the Junior League of Charlottesville and the Charlottesville area community foundation. Michaela Tighe, Computers4Kids grants and communications manager stated, "We rely on community support to keep our programs going and to reach out to students."

The money received will go towards purchasing computers for the program's learning lab. But now, the program's real need is volunteers. "This is an opportunity to have a big impact on a student," Tighe commented.

Directors say you don't have to be a computer wiz to apply, they only need to be able to offer one hour a week to help make a difference in the life of a child. Ellison added, "It not only helps the child, but your life will be enriched, as well."

Many students who complete the Computers4Kids program go on to enroll in colleges and universities. Some even return to Computers4Kids as mentors for other students.
