Sources inside city hall say Maurice Jones will be Charlottesville's next city manager.
Up to now, it has been kept secret, but NBC29 is being told that Maurice Jones will be the next Charlottesville city manager, pending negotiations on contract details.
Two city hall insiders are indicating that Jones has been officially offered the job as city manager and that he is finishing up negotiations with Charlottesville City Council. Charlottesville Mayor Dave Norris says they are in the process of hammering out salary and benefit details with their choice.
There were three finalists. Tuesday, two of them confirmed they are not in negotiations with Charlottesville, leaving Jones as the only candidate standing. Neither Jones nor Norris will confirm the reports, but other sources inside city hall say Jones is the choice and has been at the top of the list all along.
"The Thanksgiving holiday did delay that process a little bit, but we are actively discussing terms of employment with the candidate and hope to have an announcement this week," said Norris.
Norris says the top priority for whoever gets the spot will be preparing the upcoming budget.
Jones has been the acting city manager since Gary O'Connell left the spot in April. Over 80 people, from 30 different states and the District of Columbia applied for the job when it opened.
