A middle school in Crozet is getting a green energy make over thanks to a grant and a huge fundraising push. Three years ago the librarian at Henley Middle School in Crozet wanted to get students to be more environmentally friendly with a modest recycling program. Now, that initial green push has turned into an all out green make over.
It was a modest idea for a school recycling program that snowballed into something bigger. Librarian and Environmental Coordinator Susan Guerrant said, "A group of Henley staff decided it was time to help our community become more environmentally aware and proactive." Books aren't Guerrant's only passion. Through proposals to the school board and a huge fundraising effort, the Henley Hornets are getting a green makeover.
The Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy awarded Albemarle County Schools with funding for solar thermal, solar electric, and a small wind power system, and they gave the grant to Henley because of the school's passion and fundraising power. Guerrant said, "We have had an incredible fundraising effort. PATSO, which is our parent teacher organization, has been generous. There have been private donors. We have done bake sales, and I've raised thousands of dollars one cupcake at a time."
Thanks to that grant, and $40,000 in fundraiser money, the school will soon be outfitted with solar panels and other renewable resources that will power classrooms, heat the water system and lower energy costs. But, it's also a hands-on learning experience.
Henley Middle School Teacher Kathy Verell said, "Alternative energy sources is a huge concept in middle school science classrooms, so what a great idea. What a wonderful learning opportunity."
Guerrant wants to make this a community wide learning experience. Once the solar panels are installed on the roof, there will be a model of one on the ground for students and visitors to see. They're hoping to get everything installed this school year.
