The Coca-Cola Bottling Company is closing its doors in Charlottesville. The century old business is consolidating its Charlottesville operations to a location near Richmond. Now the fate of 42 full time employees is up in the air.
A Coca-Cola spokesperson says they are going to work closely with each employee about their options. They're hopeful many will relocate to the Sandston plant. The employees at the warehouse on Preston Avenue were told the news Monday.
The Mid-Atlantic Coca-Cola Bottling Company is closing the Charlottesville building on September 17. Sales and distribution will be relocated just outside of Richmond, near the airport.
Curtis Etherly, Coca-Cola's vice president of public affairs and communications says that location is larger and provides them with more options. "We have more flexibility to accommodate growth, to accommodate what continues to be a very vigorous and competitive business environment," he stated. "We had more opportunity to do that out of our Sandston facility."
The fate of the building on Preston Avenue is also up in the air. Coca-Cola says it's undecided about what will happen to it.
Coca-Cola also says the distribution of Coke products will not be affected by the move. Businesses will still get their products in a timely fashion.
City of Charlottesville Spokesperson Ric Barrick says they are disappointed that Coca-Cola has chosen to consolidate their operations. While Coca-Cola is undecided on the fate of the building, the city does note it is prime real estate, very close to downtown.
