Grand Jury to Hear Case of Teen Accused of Smothering Baby

A 17-year-old Staunton girl faces first-degree murder charges for allegedly suffocating her two-month-old baby.

At a preliminary hearing Monday afternoon Ashkea Johnson learned her case will go to the Staunton grand jury.

A police investigator told the judge that Johnson confessed to smothering her baby girl by holding a plastic bag over her nose and mouth. The infant was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center where she died several days later.

Johnson faces up to life in prison.
