The Albemarle County Police Department is dealing with a major personnel issue within its ranks. A number of officers have been disciplined for behavior that's being described as inappropriate.
We're told that inappropriate behavior happened while at least one of the officers was on the clock for the county.
Police Chief John Miller refused to say why disciplinary action was taken. Several sources tell NBC29 that one officer has been fired. Two others, a sergeant and a corporal, have been demoted, and a lieutenant has been suspended.
NBC29 raised questions about how the move may impact public safety. All we were told was that it's a personnel matter. Our sources tell us there is an on-going investigation about the behavior and that the officers accused of the inappropriate behavior were not all involved in it at the same time.
NBC29 HD News has filed freedom of information requests about the disciplinary actions and have also requested information on the employment status of the officers involved.
The county says it will provide that information Friday morning.
