AMC Going Smoke Free

Augusta Medical Center kicks off a year long campaign to help the community kick tobacco dependence. AMC's Fishersville campus is going tobacco free in August of 2009. Employees, patients, and visitors will not be allowed to use any kind of tobacco products in and around the hospital.

A tobacco task force is developing education programs to help people kick the habit before the new policy is in place.

Dana Breeding of AMC Community Wellness said, "It's another culture change just like when there was no tobacco smoke allowed inside a building. That was a huge culture change, so now the fact that an actual facility, the grounds are saying, 'no, we don't want tobacco use here'."

After next August AMC staff will offer packets with nicotine replacement gum and lozenges for a quick fix. But those will also come with an offer to learn more about breaking the addiction.
