Life in Prison: Washington Pleads Guilty

Posted: Updated: Dec 14, 2007 12:02 AM EST

The man charged in two of the Charlottesville serial rapist cases was in court Monday afternoon.  Nathan Washington has pleaded guilty to four of the serial rapist attacks and will serve four consecutive life sentences.

Washington plead guilty to two charges of rape and two charges of sodomy. In exchange for the guilty plea, prosecutors will not pursue charges in the other attacks. The plea agreement was announced in Charlottesville Circuit Court.

He will be formally sentenced in February.

Washington was also charged in Albemarle County with breaking and entering in connection with an attempted rape case. He will serve 20 years in prison for that charge.

Washington was arrested in August at his home in Abbington Crossing. The husband and father of three had been charged with two of seven serial rape cases.

Washington was linked to the attacks thanks to an orange soda. One of the women who he'd attacked saw him and wrote down his license plate number.

Police put Washington under surveillance and followed him to the Barracks Road Burger King where he ate lunch. They were able to pull the cup he'd been drinking out of the trash and get DNA from the straw.

That DNA was then tied back to the attacks, led to an arrest, and ultimately, to this afternoon's guilty plea.

Washington has also agreed to cooperate with police on other attacks that may be unsolved or have not been reported.

  1. A former University of Virginia associate dean who is facing federal child porn charges is expected to plead guilty on Monday.
