Virginia Republicans will hold a convention instead of a primary next year to choose their candidate to succeed retiring Senator John Warner.
The state's Party Central Committee voted 47-37 Sunday in favor of a convention. No date or location has been decided.
Convention supporters said it's more cost-effective and would avoid a battle between candidates in a primary. Primary backers think it would have attracted new voters to the party.
