Fire Damages Charlottesville Apartments

Posted: Updated:

A fire heavily damaged several homes in the Abbington crossing apartments in Charlottesville Friday afternoon.

Six families were displaced by the fire, but luckily no one was injured.

Neighbors say there were some tense moments when the smoke started to pour over the apartment complex.

Denise carver was a witness to the scene. "earlier it was pitch black. You could definitely tell that it was something on fire that wasn't supposed to be on fire.  So it was just a dark, black smoke."

It took firefighters a few hours to make sure there were no hot spots once the fire was put out.

Investigators say an improperly discarded cigarette butt was to blame.
