JMU Students Take Out The Trash

Posted: Updated:

James Madison University students could do a lot better job of recycling, and perhaps, so could you.

That's the message behind this annual Sorting of the Trash at JMU. Environmental health students rummaged through tons of refuse, and picked out bottles, cans, paper and other recyclables. They point out that once those materials end up in the garbage, they needlessly head straight for the landfill.

Health Sciences instructor Georgia Polacek says, "Since we have things that are recyclable and we have recycle bins, we're doing it to show that a lot of stuff isn't being recycled that should be. We had a whole pile of trash back here behind us, and they sorted it down to three bags of trash."

The JMU students donned protective gear for the visual demonstration.  Among their goals is to help their campus improve its sustainability and stewardship.
