A man accused of gunning down his girlfriend and leaving her to die was set to face a judge in Rockingham County Thursday and now, John Myers is one step closer to trial.
Thursday afternoon 45-year-old John Franklin Myers was scheduled for a preliminary hearing for the September killing in Grottoes. But Myers and his attorney, a former prosecutor, waived his right to that hearing. The case will go straight to a Rockingham County grand jury.
Myers is charged with first-degree murder and two firearms charges and could face up to life in prison if convicted.
The shooting took place on Cloverdale Lane at the Black Rock Mobile Home Park just north of the Augusta County line. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots, then finding 30-year-old Virginia Lynn Ware dead outside her home.
Deputies and tracking dogs searched in vain for the suspect in nearby woods. Myers called the Augusta County Sheriff's Office the next morning, and turned himself in.
Myers is being held in the Rockingham County Regional Jail, and will go before the grand jury on November 16.
One of the charges he's facing is possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Court records show he previously served prison time for a shooting in Richmond.
