Georgia Tech's option offense dominated time of possesion and the Cavalier offense could not capitalize on several touchdown opportunities as the Jackets beat Virgina 34-9 at a wet Scott Stadium. Driving rain off and on throughout the game caused problems including fumbles and dropped passes.
In the first half alone, Tech held the ball for 19:55 to UVa's 10:05. Virginia jumped out to a 6-3 lead early in the 2nd quarter after Robert Randolph hit a 19 yard field goal. This was Randolph's 2nd field goal of the first half, the first being a 49 yard kick that doinked over the bottom of the uprights.
The Cavalier defense could not stop GT QB Josh Nesbitt, who scored on a 1 yard TD run with 9:34 to go in the 2nd quarter to put the Yellow Jackets up for good. GT Kicker Scott Blair tacked on a 23-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give the Jackets a 13-6 lead.
In the second half, the Georgia Tech offense went on a 10:47 drive to start the half, capped off by Anthony Allen's 1 yard touchdown run that seemed to break the Cavalier defense. Allen would tack on another score on a 20-yard touchdown with 9:37 to go to put the Yellow Jackets up 27-9.
Meanwhile Jameel Sewell was almost the entire Cavalier offense. He threw for 169 yards and ran for 26, this of Virginia's total 199 yards of offense. However, he couldn't overcome several dropped passes, including 2 in the end zone early in the fourth quarter, either of which would have cut the Jackets lead to a touchdown and UVa was forced to settle for another Randolph field goal.
A Nesbitt touchdown with 3:04 to go in the 4th quarter capped off the scoring.
Georgia Tech moves to 7-1, 5-1 in the ACC while UVa falls to 3-4, 2-1 in the confernce. UVa hosts Duke on Halloween while Georgia Tech goes out of conference to visit Vanderbilt.
