NBC29Fluvanna County School Board Forum

Fluvanna County School Board Forum

Posted: Updated:

Parents in Fluvanna County will get a chance to hear what candidates running for the county school board have to say at a forum. The Fluvanna Taxpayers Association is sponsoring the event and said the candidates hold the "purse strings" to the county's biggest spending category. Sixty-two percent of the county's total budget goes to pay for education.

"We're focused on fiscal impact on tax bills of county policies and spending decisions," said Elizabeth Franklin, Chair of the Fluvanna Taxpayers Association.

Four of the five candidates running for the county school board will face some tough questions.  One spending decision involves paying for the new $71 million high school.

"Citizens will be very much thinking about how can we afford what actually is the second most expensive high school in Virginia and afford to educate our children well in the small rural county that we are," said Franklin.

Tom Smith is the Superintendent of Fluvanna County Public Schools and said there are several challenges the school board faces including growth. Smith said the student population has doubled from 1900 students to 3800 over the past 20 years.

"Our current high school population is over the capacity, we're reaching capacity at Central which is our main elementary school," said Smith.

The board will also have to figure out how to keep teacher salaries at a competitive level while they anticipate a decline in state revenues.

"Sixty cents out of our educational dollar comes from somebody else, whether it's federal or state government and so that's going to be a real issue for us if the state dollars aren't there because they've driven a large part of what we do," said Smith.

The forum is Tuesday, October 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the Fluvanna County Public Library. It's open to the public.

The Fluvanna County School Board Candidates are:

  • Doug Johnson, Cunningham District
  • Rennie "R.J" Searcy, Cunningham District
  • Vivian Leach, Rivanna District
  • Brian Phillips, Rivanna District
  • Camilla Washington, Columbia District (she will not be attending the forum)
