High-tech learning is part of everyday life inside a Waynesboro classroom. Wenonah Elementary School is hosting an educational experiment and excited students are already calling it a success.
Most elementary schools are equipped with computer labs, perhaps a smart board in each classroom, but one classroom at Wenonah goes far beyond that, giving each student access to high-tech tools that they use in every subject, every day.
Jessica Skeen’s fifth-grade class is equipped with Apple laptops and I-Touch handheld devices, enough to put one in each child's hands. They teach science, math and reading through quizzes, educational games and interactive videos. The students can do research on the internet, and will be able to meet real-life scientists through video conference.
Skeens said, “One of our goals and objectives this year was just to increase engagement and the excitement for learning, and that's happened in a week and a half, every one of my 20 students is on task.”
The model classroom cost Waynesboro $30,000.
