Tolsdorf Murder Preliminary Hearing

Posted: Updated:

Two Staunton men are accused of shooting a former roommate and dumping his body over a ravine. Both suspects faced the judge Wednesday evening in Rockingham County.

Judge William Heatwole certified charges against the two murder suspects after a preliminary hearing. During that hearing, we found out how and why prosecutors believe the murder took place.

Justin Bindel and Brian Bingham, both 20, face first-degree murder and firearms charges. They are accused of murdering Michael Ryan Tolsdorf and leaving his body in a remote part of Rockingham County on Route 33.

Tolsdorf's body was discovered on April 10 at the bottom of a steep embankment not far from the West Virginia line. Tolsdorf was shot in the stomach and back with a shotgun. Prosecutors say they believe that Bindel was the triggerman.

Police arrested Bindel and Bingham in Florida in May. They were extradited and are being held in the Rockingham regional jail.

According to one witness Wednesday, Bingham and Bindel wanted to get rid of Tolsdorf because they feared he's implicate them in a string of burglaries.

Prosecutors did not offer any eyewitnesses to the shooting or any physical evidence, but put together enough testimony to get the charges certified to grand jury.
