In Depth: Rolling Stone Alleges Rape Culture at UVA

In November 2014, Rolling Stone magazine published "A Rape on Campus" by Sabrina Rubin Erdely. In the article, a University of Virginia student identified as "Jackie" described being gang raped at the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity house in September of 2012.

Shortly after questions arose about the accuracy of the claims in the article. In April 2015, Columbia Journalism School published a review of the article and found a "failure of journalism." The magazine has redacted the article and apologized.

UVA Associate Dean of Students Nicole Eramo filed a lawsuit against Rolling Stone magazine, Erdely, and Wenner Media. The suit asked for $7.5 million in compensatory damages and $350,000 in punitive damages in legal costs. The jury awarded her $3 million.
