Balancing economic and environmental sustainability is the topic of a two-day conference in Charlottesville.
Thursday at the Omni, more than a dozen speakers talked about ecosystems services. That's the idea of getting the marketplace to recognize the services that nature provides for better protection of our resources.
"One of the best ways we can become energy independent is to become more efficient...and that is for a consumer to reduce their demand and manage the energy they use much more effectively," stated Ridge Schuyler, Director of the 5th District for Congressman Tom Perriello.
Schuyler and other speakers stressed the importance of smart grids, which provide information to consumers about how much electricity they're using so they can better manage it.
