Homeless Ask City for Housing Help

Posted: Updated: March 11, 2008 04:31 PM EDT

Charlottesville's homeless community held an impromptu meeting Tuesday afternoon to petition the city for help. They met in Lee Park to discuss affordable housing.

The organizer, Angela Allen, says more people will soon be out on the streets because the city's temporary homeless shelter closes on Saturday. She says the Hope House could soon close as well. The result would leave more than 100 without a place to sleep.

"Nobody wants homeless people here. We don't want homeless people here and we are homeless as well, " said Allen. "We don't want to be homeless. We want to be just like everybody else. We don't like what we do at all...but until we get help with housing assistance, it's not gonna happen."

The group is collecting signatures on a petition to the city for help. So far they have about 200.
