A grand jury has indicted Harrisonburg City Treasurer Rebecca Neal for defrauding the city of more than $100,000. This comes after a three-month investigation that led to authorities raiding the treasurer's office.
Neal faces 20 indictments--eight are felonies for misusing or misappropriating public funds. Last month investigators raided Neal's office and hauled out filing cabinets, boxes, and a computer as a part of their investigation. Police also executed a search warrant on her home. Neal is in her third four-year term as treasurer.
"This investigation is ongoing. These are the initial charges and action from the Harrisonburg Police Department and Commonwealth's Attorney's office and the Attorney General's office. We certainly welcome any information from any parties that are familiar with the operations and situations within these cases," said Commonwealth's Attorney Marsha Garst.
Authorities are asking for the public's help in the ongoing investigation. Anyone with information should call Harrisonburg police. Neal was taken into custody on a $5,000 secured bond on Tuesday.
Her next court date will be March 20. The case could be sent to trial at that point.
