It's official: In February, Charlottesville's Habitat for Humanity will take over the Southwood Mobile Home Park, giving it the second largest land inventory of any Habitat chapter in the country.
The 100-acre lot is just south of Interstate 64 on Fifth Street Extended in Albemarle County. The community currently has 371 trailer pads and 1,200 residents, many of whom are low income working families and senior citizens.
Habitat says they'll work with residents to design the new Southwood neighborhood.
"By selling Southwood to Habitat...Ms. Minor's giving us the opportunity to redevelop Southwood into a sustainable, mixed-use income community that will include affordable housing for the people who've always lived there," stated Habitat's executive director Overton McGehee.
No significant near-term changes are planned other than to enhance the appearance of the community.
