UVA Doctor Gets Money for Prostate Cancer Research

Posted: Updated:

UVA Medical Center now has an extra $1.5 million to study prostate cancer. Doctor Daniel Gioeli in the microbiology department received the money from the National Cancer Institute. He's studying how even small amounts of certain hormones play a role in making that type of cancer grow.

"For me the most exciting thing is now we have some of the resources to address what I think is a very interesting and important question. So for me that's the most exciting aspect of it, is now we can start to answer a piece of the puzzle," shared Daniel Gioli, Ph.D.

The American Cancer Society estimates there will be more than 185,000 new cases of prostate cancer in the United States this year.
