Memorial Day remembrances began in Staunton on Sunday with a special service to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our country.
The United Daughters of the Confederacy re-dedicated the Confederate Monument at Staunton's Thornrose Cemetery. Those in attendance honored the 1,700 soldiers and 77 unknowns buried at the site.
During the ceremony, Civil War reenactors waved the flag of the Old South, and the Stonewall Brigade Band played in tribute. Wreaths were laid to commemorate the lives lost in all wars.
