Virginia Department of Transportation officials are planning to re-time traffic signals on Route 29 North. The news comes after a new University of Virginia study shows getting caught at traffic signals is hitting people in the gas tank.
"We were interested in trying to reset the signal timing plan making better fuel efficiency and minimizing emissions," said Brian Park, a UVA professor.
"Cars are much more efficient traveling at highway speeds than sitting in traffic," added Dean Gustafson with VDOT.
The study also indicated aggressive drivers who change lanes and accelerate often waste more gas than those who drive carefully. VDOT officials say the signals could be changed as soon as next month.
