Medical Center Volunteers Honored for 100 Years of Service
UVA Medical Center volunteers were recognized Thursday. Members of the hospital auxiliary acted out the roles they've played over the 100 years of service.
Here's one example of how times have changed: In the early part of the last century cigarettes were handed out for free. Today, volunteers work in the gift shop and in more than 50 other areas of the hospital.
"It's over 900 individuals who provide that service, and last year they provided over 70,000 hours of service; that's 35 person years worth of care," shared CEO of the UVA Health System, R. Edward Howell.
In addition to service, since 1980 alone, the auxiliary has donated over $4 million to the health system.
