An fire claimed the life of an elderly Fluvanna County man early Wednesday afternoon. Three rescue crews responded to the scene called into 9-1-1 by construction workers as the passed a home on Hockwood Way in Kents Store.
When firefighters got to the home, they say smoke was unstoppable. The house was already partially collapsed and engulfed by flames.
As firefighters battle the blaze, neighbors said they believed someone was in the home. Officials say firefighters went upstairs and found Richard Clark dead.
"From what I'm getting from the attack crew, they found the victim in the upstairs foyer as he was trying to come out of the building," said Captain Dennis Brent with the Palmyra Fire Company.
Parts of the fire were still smoldering hours later.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. The fire chief told us they are turning the scene over to arson and medical examiners.
